Julia Gillard

Former prime minister of Australia

The first woman to become prime minister of Australia, a tumultuous three years in the top job did not stop Gillard from leaving a lasting legacy. Her $22 billion National Disability Insurance Scheme was the largest reform to disability services ever undertaken in Australia.

Since leaving office Gillard has focussed her energy towards an issue close to her heart. She has become an ambassador for US First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let Girls Learn initiative, a project that aims to rectify a global situation where 62 million girls are not in school. Since joining the Global Partnership for Education, Gillard has also worked closely with Malala Yousafzai, the Nobel Peace Prize-winning teenager who was shot in the head by the Taliban in 2012 for demanding education for girls.

“She remains an inspiration to many people working the for-purpose sector. She did more in three years than many of us can hope to do in a lifetime.”
